NDIS Support for Mental Health and Psychosocial Disabilities
Mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities can have a profound impact on every aspect of a person’s life. For many Australians living with these conditions the NDIS offers a pathway to accessing the specialist support needed to build resilience, pursue recovery and live a more fulfilling and independent life.
In this guide we explain what psychosocial disability means within the NDIS framework, what supports are available for participants living with mental health conditions and how to access the right support for your individual needs and circumstances.
What Is a Psychosocial Disability
A psychosocial disability is a disability that arises from a mental health condition. It refers to the functional limitations and participation restrictions that a person experiences as a result of their mental health condition rather than the diagnosis itself. Common mental health conditions that may give rise to a psychosocial disability include:
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Major depressive disorder
- Anxiety disorders including generalised anxiety, panic disorder and post traumatic stress disorder
- Borderline personality disorder
- Obsessive compulsive disorder
- Eating disorders
It is important to note that having a mental health diagnosis does not automatically mean a person has a psychosocial disability. The NDIS focuses on the functional impact of the condition on daily life rather than the diagnosis itself.
Is Mental Health Covered by the NDIS
Yes. The NDIS does fund supports for people living with psychosocial disabilities arising from mental health conditions. However not everyone with a mental health condition will be eligible for the NDIS. To access NDIS funding a person must meet the NDIS access criteria which requires that their disability is permanent or likely to be permanent and has a significant functional impact on their daily life and participation in the community.
If you are unsure whether your mental health condition meets the NDIS access criteria, a Functional Capacity Assessment can provide the evidence needed to support your application. Learn more about our Functional Capacity Assessment service.
What NDIS Supports Are Available for Mental Health and Psychosocial Disability
The NDIS funds a range of supports specifically designed to assist participants living with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities. The most relevant supports include:
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is one of the most impactful supports available for participants living with mental health conditions. A qualified recovery coach works alongside participants to develop personalised recovery plans, build resilience and help them achieve their mental health and independence goals.
At Montsun we deliver specialist Psychosocial Recovery Coaching for participants across Darwin, Remote NT and Australia wide. Our recovery coaches bring genuine expertise in mental health recovery and trauma informed practice to every coaching relationship.
Specialist Support Coordination
For participants with complex psychosocial needs that require intensive coordination across multiple service systems, Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination may be the most appropriate support. Our specialist coordinators have extensive experience working with participants living with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities.
Learn more about our Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination service.
Support Coordination
For participants with lower complexity psychosocial needs, Level 2 Support Coordination can help with navigating the NDIS, connecting with mental health service providers and implementing an effective support plan.

Therapeutic Supports
The NDIS also funds a range of therapeutic supports for participants with psychosocial disabilities including psychology, occupational therapy and other allied health interventions. These supports are typically funded under the Capacity Building budget and are designed to help participants develop skills and strategies to manage their mental health condition more effectively.
How to Access NDIS Mental Health Support
Accessing NDIS support for a mental health condition or psychosocial disability involves several key steps:
Step 1. Check Your Eligibility
To access the NDIS you must meet the eligibility criteria including being under 65 years of age, being an Australian citizen or permanent resident and having a permanent disability that significantly impacts your daily functioning. A Functional Capacity Assessment can provide the evidence needed to support your eligibility application.
Step 2. Gather Supporting Evidence
Strong supporting evidence is critical to a successful NDIS access request or plan review. This includes reports from your treating mental health professionals, a Functional Capacity Assessment and any other documentation that demonstrates the functional impact of your condition on your daily life.
Step 3. Submit Your Access Request
Once you have gathered your supporting evidence you can submit an access request to the NDIA either online through the NDIS website or by contacting the NDIA directly. You can also seek assistance from a Local Area Coordinator or an independent NDIS consultant.
Step 4. Attend Your Planning Meeting
If your access request is approved you will be invited to attend a planning meeting with the NDIA or a Local Area Coordinator. This is your opportunity to discuss your goals, support needs and the types of funding you are seeking. Come prepared with a clear picture of how your mental health condition impacts your daily life and what supports you need to achieve your goals.
Step 5. Engage Your Support Team
Once your NDIS plan is approved you can begin engaging the supports funded in your plan. If your plan includes Recovery Coaching or Support Coordination funding, Montsun is here to help. Submit a referral through our referral page or contact us via our contact page to get started.
