NDIS Recovery Coaching vs Support Coordination — What Is the Difference
If you are navigating the NDIS and have been told you may be eligible for either Recovery Coaching or Support Coordination, you are not alone in feeling confused about the difference. These two supports serve very different purposes and understanding which one is right for you can make a significant difference to your NDIS outcomes.
In this guide we break down the key differences between NDIS Recovery Coaching and Support Coordination, explain who each support is designed for and help you decide which option best suits your individual needs and circumstances.
What Is NDIS Support Coordination
NDIS Support Coordination is a funded support that helps participants implement their NDIS plan, connect with appropriate service providers and build the skills needed to manage their own supports over time. It is available at two levels depending on the complexity of a participant’s needs.
Level 2 Support Coordination is designed for participants who need practical assistance navigating their NDIS plan and connecting with local providers. Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination is a higher intensity support for participants with complex, high risk or crisis related needs requiring specialist intervention and multidisciplinary coordination.

What Is NDIS Recovery Coaching
NDIS Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is a specialised support designed specifically for participants living with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities. Unlike support coordination which focuses on plan implementation and provider connection, recovery coaching takes a strengths based, goal focused approach to help participants build resilience, develop personalised recovery plans and work toward greater independence and wellbeing.
Recovery coaching is delivered by qualified professionals with specialist knowledge in mental health recovery, psychosocial disability and trauma informed practice. It is funded under the Capacity Building budget in a participant’s NDIS plan under the specific line item for Recovery Coaching.

Key Differences Between Recovery Coaching and Support Coordination
While both supports are funded under the Capacity Building budget in an NDIS plan, they serve distinctly different purposes. Here is a clear comparison to help you understand the key differences:
Focus and Purpose
Support Coordination focuses on helping participants implement their NDIS plan, navigate service systems and connect with appropriate providers. Recovery Coaching focuses specifically on mental health recovery, building resilience and helping participants develop the skills and strategies needed to manage their psychosocial disability and pursue their personal recovery goals.
Who Delivers the Support
Support Coordination is delivered by qualified support coordinators with experience in disability services and NDIS plan management. Recovery Coaching is delivered by specialists with specific expertise in mental health recovery, psychosocial disability and trauma informed practice.
Who the Support Is Designed For
Support Coordination is available to a wide range of NDIS participants who need assistance navigating their plan and connecting with services. Recovery Coaching is specifically designed for participants whose primary disability is related to mental health or psychosocial conditions.
Funding Category
Both supports are funded under the Capacity Building budget in an NDIS plan. However they are listed under different line items and cannot be used interchangeably. Your NDIS plan must specifically include funding for the support you wish to access.
Can You Have Both Recovery Coaching and Support Coordination
Yes. In some circumstances a participant may be eligible to have both Recovery Coaching and Support Coordination included in their NDIS plan at the same time. This is particularly relevant for participants with complex psychosocial disabilities who require both intensive mental health focused coaching and practical NDIS plan coordination.
Whether you are eligible for one or both supports will depend on the complexity of your needs, your NDIS plan goals and the NDIA’s assessment of your circumstances. If you believe you may benefit from both supports, speak with your LAC, support planner or contact our team directly to discuss your options.
Which Support Is Right for You
Choosing the right NDIS support depends on your individual circumstances, goals and the nature of your disability. Here is a simple guide to help you decide:
- If you need help understanding and implementing your NDIS plan and connecting with local service providers, Support Coordination is likely the right fit
- If your primary disability is a mental health condition or psychosocial disability and you want to focus on building resilience and working toward personal recovery goals, Recovery Coaching may be more appropriate
- If you have complex, high risk or crisis related needs that require intensive specialist coordination across multiple service systems, Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination may be the right option
- If you have both a psychosocial disability and complex coordination needs, you may benefit from having both Recovery Coaching and Support Coordination included in your NDIS plan

How to Access Recovery Coaching or Support Coordination Through Your NDIS Plan
