What Is Specialist Support Coordination and Who Needs It
If you or someone you care for has complex support needs, navigating the NDIS can feel overwhelming. Specialist Support Coordination is designed specifically for people in this situation. It is the highest level of support coordination available under the NDIS and it exists to help participants with the most complex circumstances get the right support at the right time.
In this guide we explain what Specialist Support Coordination is, who it is for, how it differs from standard support coordination and how to access it through your NDIS plan.
What Is Specialist Support Coordination
Specialist Support Coordination is a Level 3 NDIS support that provides high intensity, expert coordination for participants with complex, high risk or crisis related needs. It is funded under the Capacity Building budget in an NDIS plan and is delivered by qualified professionals with specialist knowledge in areas such as mental health, psychosocial disability and justice involvement.
Unlike standard support coordination, Specialist Support Coordination goes beyond connecting participants with service providers. It involves managing complex service systems, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, developing crisis plans and working closely with the NDIA, allied health professionals and other agencies to ensure participants receive comprehensive, integrated support.
At Montsun we deliver expert Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination for participants across Darwin, Remote NT and Australia wide. Learn more about our Specialist Support Coordination service.
What Is the Difference Between Level 2 and Level 3 Support Coordination
Many participants are unsure whether they need Level 2 or Level 3 support coordination. Here is a simple breakdown:
Level 2 Support Coordination is suitable for participants with low to moderate complexity needs. It focuses on helping participants understand their NDIS plan, connect with local service providers and build their capacity to self manage their supports over time.
Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination is designed for participants with high complexity needs who require intensive, specialist intervention. It is appropriate for participants experiencing crisis, mental health challenges, justice involvement or significant barriers to accessing mainstream services.
If you are unsure which level of support coordination is right for you, our experienced team can help. Visit our Support Coordination page to learn more about Level 2 support or contact us directly to discuss your specific circumstances.
Who Needs Specialist Support Coordination
Specialist Support Coordination is not available to all NDIS participants. The NDIA allocates this funding to participants whose circumstances require a higher level of specialist expertise and intensive coordination. You may be eligible for Specialist Support Coordination if you:
- Are living with a complex mental health condition or psychosocial disability that significantly impacts your daily functioning
- Have a history of justice involvement and are navigating the intersection of the legal system and the NDIS
- Are at risk of harm, homelessness or require urgent crisis planning and intervention
- Have multiple diagnoses that require coordination across several service systems and allied health providers
- Are transitioning from a hospital, forensic or justice setting into community based living
- Are living in a remote NT community with limited access to mainstream disability support services
- Have experienced a breakdown in your current support arrangements and require immediate specialist intervention
What Does a Specialist Support Coordinator Do
A Specialist Support Coordinator works intensively with participants, their families and their support networks to manage complex NDIS cases and achieve meaningful outcomes. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing comprehensive crisis plans for participants at risk
- Coordinating multidisciplinary teams including allied health professionals, mental health services and legal support networks
- Navigating complex service systems on behalf of the participant
- Preparing high quality NDIS progress reports and plan review documentation for the NDIA
- Identifying, connecting and coordinating the most appropriate service providers to meet the participant’s individual goals
- Advocating for the participant’s rights, safety and wellbeing across all service interactions
How to Access Specialist Support Coordination Through Your NDIS Plan
To access Specialist Support Coordination your NDIS plan must include specific funding for this support under the Capacity Building budget. If your current plan includes this funding you can engage Montsun as your Specialist Support Coordinator if you are self managed or plan managed.
If your current NDIS plan does not include Specialist Support Coordination funding, you may be able to request this support at your next plan review. Our team can assist you in preparing the necessary documentation and evidence to support this request.
